CSLB defines C-7 around energy-limited communication and low-voltage systems that do not exceed 91 volts. Its examples include telephone, sound and closed-circuit video systems. Low-voltage fire alarms are expressly excluded from this classification.

What is a C-7 Low Voltage Systems contractor in California?
C-7 is a California contractor license classification for specified energy-limited communication and low-voltage systems. CSLB describes systems that do not exceed 91 volts and lists examples including telephone, sound and closed-circuit video. The classification has boundaries, so the actual project scope still needs to be reviewed.
Is C-7 the same as a general electrical contractor license?
No. C-7 is the Low Voltage Systems classification; it is not interchangeable with a general electrical contractor classification. A project that includes line-voltage electrical work needs the appropriate licensing and coordination. The proposal should clearly separate low-voltage work from other trade responsibilities.
Does C-7 cover low-voltage fire alarm installation?
No. CSLB expressly excludes low-voltage fire alarm systems from the C-7 classification. A fire-alarm installation or interface must be reviewed with the appropriately licensed provider and the relevant authority. It should not be treated as covered merely because a circuit operates at low voltage.
